How Franchise Brands Use SEO to Sell Franchises and Rank Every Location

A franchise brand has two marketing jobs at once. It needs a steady flow of qualified people who want to buy a franchise, and it needs every open location to get found by customers nearby. Both start with a search on Google, and SEO can serve both if you build for them separately.

Here is how we approach franchise SEO, from ranking for franchise opportunity searches to getting every location into the Maps pack.

Two Audiences, Two Sets of Searches

Franchise buyers and customers search in completely different ways. Mixing them on the same pages confuses Google and confuses visitors.

  • Prospective franchisees search: "[category] franchise", "[category] franchise opportunities", "[category] franchise cost", "franchise opportunities in [state]", "best [category] franchise to own"
  • Customers search: "[product] near me", "[category] [city]", "[brand name] [city]"

Plan your site so each audience has its own section. The franchise development pages target buyer searches. The location pages target customer searches.

Rank for Your Franchise Category

The most valuable searches for franchise development are category searches. A person typing "dessert franchise" or "fitness franchise" is actively looking for a brand to buy into, and they may not know yours exists yet. Ranking there puts you in the shortlist.

That is what happened for Ben L. at Fuwa Fuwa Pancakes. Using our franchise SEO strategy, they went from 3 retail locations to 39 in just under 12 months. As Ben put it, if you Google "Dessert Franchise" you will see them ranking, and "that brings us tons of new franchisees." Their campaign also had 39 keywords ranked #1 on Google in 90 days.

Your franchise development section should include:

  • A main opportunity page targeting "[category] franchise", explaining the concept, what makes the brand different, and who it suits
  • An investment page that answers the cost question directly with the ranges you are allowed to share
  • Territory pages by state, province or region where you are actively selling, targeting "[category] franchise [state]"
  • A process page that walks through each step from first inquiry to opening day
  • Franchisee stories from current owners, in their words
  • An FAQ covering training, support, site selection and timelines
  • A qualifying inquiry form that asks for territory of interest, available capital and timeline

Have your franchise counsel review anything that touches earnings or performance. Franchise sales have their own rules, and your pages should stay within what your disclosure documents allow.

Answer the Questions Buyers Search Before They Inquire

People researching a franchise tend to search several questions before they fill out a form. Each of those questions is a chance to rank and earn trust. Write a clear article or page for each one, link it to your main opportunity page, and end it with a way to inquire.

  • "How much does it cost to open a [category] franchise"
  • "What is it like to own a [category] franchise"
  • "[Category] franchise vs starting an independent business"
  • "How long does it take to open a [brand] location"

Rank Every Location on Google Maps

Once locations open, each one needs to win its own neighbourhood. Customers rarely search for a brand's head office. They search for what they want, near where they are.

  • One Google Business Profile per location, owned by the brand, with the franchisee added as a manager
  • A consistent naming rule, such as "[Brand] [Neighbourhood]", applied to every listing
  • The same primary category across all locations, with secondary categories set per location
  • A unique location page on your website for each one: address, hours, local photos, nearby landmarks, parking, local reviews and the location's own phone number
  • Identical name, address and phone everywhere the location is listed
  • Apple Business Connect listings for every location, so Apple Maps and Siri users find them
  • A review program run centrally, with every location asking every happy customer

Avoid thin, copy-and-paste location pages that only swap the city name. Each page should give a real reason to choose that location.

Owning both Maps and organic results for a location can happen quickly. Ben C. at Hotel Rivel was ranking #1 for all of his keywords in Google in 30 days. When he searched, Google Maps came up number 1, organic came up number 1, and even the hotel's booking.com page came up #1. That is the kind of local presence each franchise location should be aiming for.

Local rankings also turn into revenue fast when the service is right. Charlie B. at Kingsway Paving reported $80k in booked jobs within the first 30 days of his SEO plan. For a franchise system, that kind of local result can repeat across every territory.

Set Clear Rules for Who Controls What

Multi-location SEO breaks down when nobody owns the details. Franchisees create their own listings, launch their own websites, or change hours without telling anyone. Decide the rules early and put them in your brand standards.

  • The brand owns the website, the location page templates and every Google Business Profile
  • Franchisees supply local photos, events and updates through an agreed process
  • Reviews get a reply within a set time, using brand guidelines
  • No separate local websites or duplicate listings
  • New locations get a profile and location page set up before opening day

Add Paid and Outbound Channels

SEO is the base, but franchise development usually moves faster with more than one channel. Our Dealflow advertising program runs done-for-you Meta, Google and TikTok ads with funnels and follow-up, and leads start within 30 days of launch. Cold email and LinkedIn outreach can reach experienced multi-unit operators directly. AI setters can reply to every franchise inquiry in seconds, ask the qualifying questions and book a discovery call on your calendar.

Track the Full Franchise Funnel

For franchise development, track inquiries by source, qualified inquiries, discovery calls, and signed agreements. For locations, track calls, direction requests and website clicks from each Google Business Profile, plus rankings for each location's main searches. Review both monthly, and put more effort into the territories and keywords that bring the best results.
