How Hotels Win More Direct Bookings by Ranking at the Top of Google and Google Maps

Every guest who books through a booking site costs a hotel a commission. The guest is the same, the room is the same, and the stay is the same. The only difference is where they clicked. When a traveler searches for your hotel or for a place to stay in your area, whatever shows up first on Google tends to get that click.

That makes search one of the most direct ways a hotel can protect its margin. If your own website and your own Google listing sit at the top, more guests book with you directly. This post covers how to get there.

Ben C. at Hotel Rivel saw it within 30 days of working with Variance. He ran Google searches and, in his words, basically everything came up number 1: Google Maps number 1, organic number 1, and even the hotel's booking.com page came up #1. When the hotel owns the top of the page for its own searches, the guest finds the hotel first.

Win the Searches for Your Own Name First

The easiest bookings to lose are the ones from people who already know your hotel. They type your name into Google and the first thing they see is a booking site listing. Fix this first:

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Correct name, address, phone, check-in and check-out times, amenities and a link straight to your booking engine.
  • Make your website the best result for your name. Clear title, your location in the page text, real photos, room details and a booking button above the fold.
  • Give guests a reason to book direct. Best rate on your own site, a free upgrade, late checkout, breakfast or parking. Say it on the homepage and on the booking page.

Then Win the Searches Travelers Make Before They Know You

Most travelers do not start with a hotel name. They search for an area, a need or an event. "Hotel near the convention center." "Boutique hotel downtown." "Pet friendly hotel near the beach." Each of these is a chance to be found by a guest who has not chosen yet.

  1. List the searches a guest would make to find a hotel like yours: by neighborhood, landmark, airport, event venue, amenity and type of trip.
  2. Build a useful page for each important one. A page about staying near a specific venue should cover distance, how to get there, and which rooms suit that kind of trip.
  3. Write about your area as a local would. Restaurants, events and things to do near the hotel help travelers plan and help Google see your site as the place to learn about staying there.
  4. Keep the site fast on phones. Most travel searches happen on mobile, and a slow page sends guests back to the search results.

Own Google Maps and Apple Maps

Many travelers decide from the map. They open it, see the pins around where they want to be, and tap the one with the best photos and reviews.

  • Photos. Rooms, bathrooms, lobby, views, pool, breakfast and the street outside. Update them often.
  • Reviews. Ask every happy guest at checkout and in a follow-up email. Reply to every review, good and bad, with a real response.
  • Categories and amenities. Choose the right primary category and fill in every amenity Google offers.
  • Apple Maps. Set up your listing through Apple Business Connect. Guests on iPhones often search there first, and many hotels never claim it.

Map rankings move fast when the profile is set up properly and the work is consistent. Hussein Q. at Columbus Perfect Tint, a local business in a very different industry, was ranking in the top spots on Google Maps within 30 days, and that brought 30 additional calls to his business. For a hotel, those same top spots mean more guests seeing your listing first.

Show Up in AI Answers

Travelers now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI results questions like "where should I stay near downtown for a weekend trip." Answer engines pull from websites, listings and reviews they trust. Clear pages that answer specific travel questions, consistent business details across the web and a steady stream of reviews all raise the chance your hotel gets named in those answers.

Make the Direct Booking Easy

Ranking only helps if the visit turns into a booking. Check the path from search to confirmation yourself on a phone:

  • Can a guest see prices and availability in two taps?
  • Is the direct-booking perk visible before they leave your site to compare?
  • Does the booking engine load fast and work without errors?
  • Is there a phone number and a chat option for guests with questions?

Fix anything that slows the guest down. Every extra step is a reason to go back to a booking site.

Then follow up after the stay. A short thank-you email with a direct-booking code for the next visit turns a guest who found you on a booking site into one who books with you next time. Over a few seasons, that list of past guests becomes one of the cheapest sources of bookings a hotel has.

The Same Approach Works Across Hospitality

This is not only for hotels. Restaurants, dessert shops, venues and attractions all win the same way: own your name, own the area searches, own the map. Ben L. at Fuwa Fuwa Pancakes ranked 39 keywords #1 in Google in 90 days, and said the business grew from 3 retail locations to 39 in just under 12 months using a franchise SEO strategy, with searches like "Dessert Franchise" bringing in new franchisees.
