In merchant cash advance and business lending, a lead is not the goal. A funded deal is. A cheap lead that never sends bank statements costs more than an expensive one that funds. Every decision in your lead generation should be judged against one number: what it costs you to fund a deal, compared with what that deal pays you.
Here is how we think about lead flow for MCA funders, ISOs and business lenders: where leads come from, what makes one worth calling, how outbound fits in, and why the first call matters so much.
Most shops start by buying leads, and there is nothing wrong with that. Buying is fast, you do not have to run ads, and you can turn volume up or down with a phone call. The tradeoffs are that quality varies a lot between sources, some leads are shared with other funders or resold after they age, and you pay for every lead whether it funds or not.
Generating your own leads takes more setup, but you control the whole chain. You decide what the ad says, which questions the application asks, who sees the ad, and whether the lead goes to anyone else. Exclusive leads that answered your questions are a different product from a list.
Many funders end up doing both. They buy from a source they trust to keep the phones busy, and they build their own channels for leads that only they will call. Whichever route you take, judge the source by funded deals and gross profit, not by cost per lead.
That is the lens Edward P. used. He spent $9k with Variance, and in his first month his team funded $929k in business loans at a commission rate of 10 to 12 percent depending on the deal, which he said brought back over $105k in gross profit.
A good lead is one your underwriters can actually fund. Whether you buy or build, the lead should arrive with enough information to sort it before anyone dials:
Set your minimums to match your funding criteria and filter on them in the form or in your intake rules. A merchant below your revenue floor is not a lead for you, no matter how cheap they were. If you buy leads, ask the seller exactly which fields are verified, whether the lead is exclusive, and how old it is when it reaches you.
Your sales team will tell you fast whether quality is there. Joseph A. called us after the first 7 days to say his team was very happy with the leads and did not complain about them, and he kept the same 50-50 mix and doubled the volume.
Inbound leads come from owners who are already looking for money. Outbound reaches owners who would take funding if the right offer arrived at the right time. Cold email and LinkedIn outreach let you go after specific business types, sizes and regions instead of waiting for them to find you.
What makes outbound work for funding:
Outbound can move quickly when the list and offer are right. For John L. at Streamline Advance, one email blast generated 253 leads at an $11 cost per lead and turned into six clients, all of them qualified, three over $200,000 deals, with one funding the day he recorded his video. In a separate video he described strong traction from the LinkedIn outreach and email campaigns and said the quality of leads was high.
A business owner who needs capital rarely applies in one place. They fill out a form, then another, then answer whichever funder calls first and sounds credible. If your rep calls back tomorrow, the merchant may already be signing with someone else.
Build your intake around speed:
Review these by lead source every week:
A source with a higher cost per lead and a strong funded rate is usually the better buy. A source with cheap leads and no submissions is telling you something about quality or about your follow-up. The submission rate shows you which one.
Keep your consent language and your calling and texting practices in line with the rules wherever you and your merchants operate. A fast callback only helps if you are allowed to make it.
